Here’s video from our last testing. 6-year-old Garrett performed his first-ever randori (that’s multiple attacker defense). He did extremely well!
Video: Bokken Yokomenuchi Practice at Aikido’Ka in Grass Valley
Here’s a brief video of weapons practice. The technique is yokomenuchi with a bokken. Yokomenuchi is a strike which lands anywhere from the temple to the side of the neck.
Aikido is largely based upon sword movement. Our weapons practice helps us understand open-hand aikido much better than just practicing without weapons. Oh, and weapons practice is a ton of fun!
Click here for the instructional video for the bokken practice.
Video – Aikido Weapons Practice in Grass Valley: Bokken Yokomenuchi
Mark Zwagerman is teaching weapons at Aikido’Ka until Jane returns in April.
Here Mark demonstrates the strike yokomenuchi with a bokken. Note the concentration on keeping connection with our partner’s center line.
Aikido is largely based upon sword movements. If you really want to improve your aikido, practice weapons! And, as an added benefit, weapons practice is tremendous fun.
Mary Explains Why She Trains at Aikido’Ka
Mary is an absolutely wonderful person who drives 50 minutes each way to train in Grass Valley at Aikido’Ka.
Here’s why:
We’re told all the time that the community at Aikido’Ka is like a fun family — accepting, kind and supportive. And tons of fun. That marvelous, welcoming feeling people get from training here stems from our diligent attention to treating everyone with the utmost respect. I don’t mean a stuffy kind of respect. I mean a truly supportive, embracing learning from our mistakes, relationship.
The real value in martial arts training is not from knowing how to fend off an attacker — traditional self-defense. The real value in practicing aikido with us is that we learn how to treat people in ways that improve our relationships day-to-day. Yes, you want to know how to defend yourself. And, you’ll learn that at Aikido’Ka. While a violent attack really may happen, it’s unlikely. But you will interact with people every, single day. And every day you will use the relationship skills you learn training here.
Oh, and it’s fun! Just ask Mary.
Congratulations to Michael Friedl Sensei
Congratulations to my Aikido teacher Michael Friedl Sensei. He was promoted today to 7th Dan!
Michael Sensei is an extraordinary martial artist and the promotion is well-deserved. He’s also an absolutely wonderful guy.
Michael Sensei will be giving a seminar at Aikido’Ka the first weekend in March. I’ll be posting the details soon.
