Camp 2011 – Part 1

Gabriel and I are at camp. We’re having a wonderful time. It’s just before breakfast Tuesday morning. We’ve been doing kettlebells in the mornings at 6:30 am. Other folks talk about joining us, but it’s just been us so far. At the bottom, is a picture of Gabriel pushing a 35 pound kettlebell in a military press. Man, Gabriel’s getting strong!

Camp has been absolutely great so far. I’ve been training with old friends, learning a lot, smiling a lot and sweating a lot — and laughing a lot.

I’m planning on posting some interesting things I learn here.

Dr. Gideon’s Community Service

Everybdy at Aikido’Ka performs community service as part of their training and rank promotion. For his yellow belt promotion, chiropractor Gideon Haimovitz Jostrand needed to do a simple project benefitting our air.

Here’s Dr. Gideon’s report about his project:

“For my air community service project, I want to start a project that will help affect Nevada County’s air quality in a positive way. I thought that this project will start with one day of riding my bike to work back and forth. I feel that this small gesture will have a large impact in our community. I will post a notice in the office for all patients to see that day explaining what I am doing and why. I will talk about the benefits of alternative transportation with every patient that day and have discussions with them about how we can make a difference.”

‘If everyone who lives within 5 miles of their workplace left their car at home just one day a week and cycled to work, nearly 5 million tons of global warming pollution would be saved every year — like taking about a million cars off the road’ — from the Environmental Defense Fund website.'”

Testimonial!

Dr. Gideon Haimovitz is a chiropractor in Grass Valley. He’s trained in several martial arts, including brazilian ju jutsu. Here’s what he says about training at Aikido’Ka:

“I am proud to be a member of this dojo and realize how wonderful it is to be surrounded by such a fantastic group of martial artists (aikidoists). For all those who say that aikido is a wimpy martial art . . . THAY ARE WRONG! Especially here at Aikido’Ka! I am amazed at how strong and empowering aikido is and that after training I am more energized for the next day. This is a martial art I could train every day and still want more.”

Thank you, Gideon for the kind words. You are terrific to train with!

Stuart’s Community Service

As you probably know by now, everyone at Aikido’Ka performs community service as part of their training.

Adult member Stuart is testing for his green belt this Saturday.  Here’s Stuart’s report on his community service:

For my community project, I volunteered with my son (also a member of Aikido’Ka) to work in his school’s garden. The Scotten School garden is still in its beginning stages. They have created a fenced section for planting and a greenhouse, and enlisted help to create planter boxes and to transport donated soil.

We arrived early on a Saturday morning and worked for a good two and a half hours shoveling, hauling and packing soil.

The wood for the planter boxes was donated by a local lumber yard, the soil donated from a student’s family, the tools from the teachers and the labor from all volunteers. It was truly a group effort.

Due to the rains this spring, the date for installing the sprinklers and drainage systems have not been set, but we have included our names for hopeful service.

Already the seeds that have been planted in the greenhouse have sprouted. It is truly wonderful to see the students getting excited and watering them by hand. Hopefully we can have them transplanted into the new planter boxes before the school term ends for summer.
